God Knows You! - Jameson Steward

God Knows You

“O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether” (Psalm 139:1-4).

One of the most significant challenges for anyone who teaches or preaches is that you don’t know some people who are listening all that well. I may know some things about you and try to make an application that I think will be helpful – but sometimes it’s just a shot in the dark.

Very few people – if any – may know of your deepest, darkest struggles with temptation. Few people may know of the difficulties you are facing in your life. Maybe no one on this earth knows about the tears you’ve cried. However, there is One who knows everything that goes on in your life.

David wrote that the LORD had searched him and knew him. This refers to profoundly personal and intimate knowledge. The LORD knew things about David that no one else knew or could have known.

David went on to say that the LORD knew what he was doing – and even knew and understood what he was thinking. David emphasizes that not only does the LORD know what you are doing, but He understands fully why you acted that way. He understands your thoughts, and He understands how you think.

The LORD fully understands and sees the path we are traveling in life, even when we may not be able to see where a particular decision will lead us. Even when you feel alone, He sees you. The LORD is “acquainted with” (or familiar with) all your ways.

David wrote that the LORD knew and understood the words he would say before he even said them. God knows and perfectly understands how your mind works and knows the words that come to your mind before you ever say them. It’s safe to say that the LORD knows us better than we even know ourselves.

The reason the LORD knows everything about us is because He made us. “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well” (Psalm 139:13-14).

Because God knows everything about us and is our Creator, His word ought to be precious to us (Psalm 139:17-18). He tells us everything we need to know (2 Timothy 3:16-17). This is why it is so crucial for preachers and teachers to proclaim God’s word (2 Timothy 4:2). I may not know you all that well – but God does, and His word is precisely what you need to hear.
