Article - The Highway of Holiness

In our modern world of transportation, a person can travel safely and efficiently to any desired destination with little or not trouble. As one studies the Bible he finds it interesting that the life of holiness is also described as a highway. God described the righteous life as a highway when He said, “A highway will be there, a roadway, And it will be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean will not travel on it, But it will be for him who walks that way, And fools will not wander on it” (Isaiah 35:8). Notice how the righteous life is like a highway.

One of the major advantages to a good highway is safety. While there may be many ways to a desired destination, the major highway is designed to be safe. The same is true for the righteous life. Like a highway, the righteous life is the safest life one can live. The Proverb writer reminds us of this when he says, “the way of the transgressor is hard” (Proverbs 13:15). The Psalmist lauded the safety of God as he said, “I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). Truly, the righteous life is like a highway because it is safe!

Another major advantage of a good highway is it is efficient. Good highways are usually the best roads to travel on. While there may be many “pig trails” that can get a person to his desired location, the major highway is usually the best and most efficient way to travel. The righteous life is also the best life to live. Jesus said, “I came that you may have life and that you may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). One of the greatest benefits of living the righteous life is it is the best life. The righteous life is the only life where we have all spiritual blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). The righteous life is the only life where God has given us everything we need to live life and be a godly person (2 Peter 1:3). Truly, the righteous life is like a highway because it is the best life!

One of the great things about modern travel is if you follow the highway carefully you can always arrive at your desired destination. In simple language, the highway gets you were you want to go! This is also true for the righteous life. The only life that can lead one to the desired destination of Heaven is the righteous life. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the father except by me” (John 14:6). Only when we follow Jesus fully will we reach the destination of Heaven (Matthew 7:21). Truly, the righteous life is like a highway because it takes us to our desired destination!

Dear friend, what road are you on right now? Are you on the road to Heaven? Are you really living the Christian life? Jesus taught us that there are two paths people often choose. One is the wayward path that leads to destruction and the other is the path that leads home to God (Matthew 7:13-14). If you are not on the path of righteousness, you desperately need to be. May God help each of us to get on the highway of holiness before the road of life ends!
