Article - The Church of Scientology

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have recently been in the spotlight over their recent break-up and impending divorce. While this is just another example of the flippant attitude people take toward marriage, even more disturbing is the involvement of Scientology in their marriage and break-up. You may be asking, “What is Scientology?” Allow me to explain a little about Scientology and its teachings.

Scientology is the “brain-child” of L. Ron Hubbard. He started this religion in the December of 1953. From the outset a person might think that Scientology is built upon science. That is not the case at all. In fact, Scientology has nothing to do with modern science. The official statement of Scientolgy.org says, “Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life… In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.” From this statement a person can realize that Scientology is nothing more than humanism and subjectivism clothed in a five-dollar word. Scientology believes that you are trapped inside your own body and until you go through the steps laid out by L. Ron Hubbard you cannot be freed to reach your full potential.

Please understand that Scientology and Christianity are incompatible in their teachings. For example, Scientology presents a very awkward view of man when they say, “Apparently, trillions of years ago thetans became bored, so they emanated mental universes to play in and amuse themselves. Soon, however, they became more and more entranced in their own creation until they were so conditioned by the manifestations of their own thought processes that they lost all awareness of their true identity and spiritual nature” (L. Ron Hubbard, Scientolgoy: A History of Man, pp. 12-76). Instead of something off of Star-Trek, the Scriptures plainly reveal that God created man in His own image and man chose to sin and became corrupt (Genesis 1:26; 3:1ff; Romans 5:12). Another example of the far-out views of Scientology is found in their account of Creation. They believe that 75 billion years ago some galactic ruler named Xenu paralyzed certain people with drugs, brought them to earth and detonated hydrogen bombs around them and out of that we were created (For a detailed explanation visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenu). Not only is this a very odd story of Creation, it is in direct conflict with the Bible. The Bible teaches that God spoke man and all that exists into being. We are the product of his genius, not some cosmic explosion (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 19:1-4).

As a person studies Scientology it will become apparent that this is not “science” but rather—SCIENCE FICTION! Although it may be the popular religion to be a part of in Hollywood, it won’t get one to Heaven. Remember, Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no man get to the Father except by Him (John 14:6).
