THE BRANCHES OF
CHRIST'S CHURCH
Some think that Jesus meant to speak of different denominations or different churches when He said in John 15:1-6, "I am the vine, you are the branches." Jesus calls Himself the vine. The word "you" used here by Jesus is thought by some to mean denominations. If it did, it could not have meant any denominations in existence today because not a single one was in existence when Christ used that language. It could not have meant the Catholic Church, for it did not begin with its Pope until the year 606. It could not have included the Lutheran Church, for it did not begin until the 1500s. All other Protestant churches such as the Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, etc., began even later. That being so, the question then is, "If Christ was talking about denominations when He said, 'you are the branches,' to which denomination/s was he speaking?"
If we let the Bible provide the answer to this question, we will see that Christ was not talking about denominations. He was talking to and about the disciples. In the sixth verse, He says, "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch."
Did anybody ever hear of a branch—one that had not been tampered with—being different from every other branch in the same vine? Who ever heard of a grapevine having branches that had one branch that was grape, another that was watermelon, another that was pumpkin, another that was squash, another cucumber, and another gourd? Yet that is the unnatural vine that you would have if the branches were different human denominations. The denominations—both those named here and thousands more not mentioned—are not branches of the church of Christ.
