—A Better Covenant

“But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises” (Heb. 8:6).  One of the main points of the book of Hebrews and the New Testament is the superiority of Christ and the New Covenant.  Notice a couple of ways the Book of Hebrews illustrates the superiority of Christianity.

THE BELIEVER HAS A RIGHT TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN (pt. 3)

Salvation is not by faith only. Another class of believers, who will be lost, is given as an example in John 12:42-43: "Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God."

The biblical record clearly states that they "believed in Him," yet for the sake of popularity among men, they did nothing about it. They were believers, but not acceptable to God. Those who "only believe" only have the right to become children of God! "Believers only" will be lost. Jesus declared, "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels" (Mk. 8:38).

Believers are almost Christians. Another class of believers without God's blessings may be found in Acts 26:19-29. The apostle Paul made his defense before King Agrippa, related the case of his own conversion to Christ, preached unto the king a crucified and resurrected Lord, the Christ, and emphasized that Moses and the prophets had foretold the same facts of the Gospel (vss. 22-23). In verses 27-28, Paul declared, "King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do believe." Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You almost persuade me to become a Christian."

In this case we have a man of God, the inspired apostle, declaring, "I know that you do believe," yet, the king replied, "You almost persuade me to become a Christian." Agrippa was a believer, but not a Christian! Although the king was a believer, as far as the divine record reveals, he went into eternity unprepared to meet God. As a believer, he had the right to become a Christian, but he did not exercise that right by obeying the Gospel, although "almost persuaded." As the old, familiar song says, "Almost cannot avail; almost is but to fail. Almost...but lost!"
