The Gospel of Christ

"YOU MIGHT BE A PHARISEE IF...", by Brandon Johnson

The Pharisees were a group of religious Jews whose calling card was observing and perpetuating the Halakah. The Halakah was an oral tradition that had been handed down by former teachers and wise men of Israel. They insisted that these oral traditions of their fathers were just as authoritative as God's law. They would impose the Halakah on others. If someone refused to conform, the Pharisees would retaliate. In some cases they would even have their opposition put to death (The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, vol. 3, p. 823). The New Testament records multiple instances of the Pharisees binding these traditions on others (Matthew 15:2; Mark 7:3, 5; Galatians 1:14; etc.). Jesus regularly rebuked the Pharisees for their traditions (Matthew 15:3-9; 23:16-22; Mark 7:7-9). He taught His disciples to beware of their doctrines (Matthew 16:6-12). In fact, Jesus spent more time teaching against the Pharisees than any other group! Jesus also dealt more harshly with the Pharisees than He did with any other group (Mathew 23). If Jesus spent so much time opposing them, then His followers should be ready to oppose their modern-day contemporaries and make sure they are not caught up in Pharisee-ism themselves.

Good News From a Far Country

As cold water to a weary soul,
So is good news from a far country.

—Proverb 25:25

You've always been so helpful sending us material for door prizes {for our ladies day} and I welcome any suggestion you might have, Cd's or Dvd's that might go along with the theme. Last year it was suggested we use material that was all the same, which was fine. We only need 40 at the most but one of our ladies always passes out extras at fairs during summer months.
