TGOC ANNOUNCES
LESSONS FIVE AND SIX IN ITS
NEWLY REVISED SERIES ON
THE BOOK OF ACTS
In the first two newsletters of 2008, we announced the first four lessons in our revised series on the Book of Acts. In this newsletter, we are announcing lessons five and six.
In Part 2 of "The Gospel into All the World," Ben Bailey covers chapters 17-19 of Acts. In Thessalonica, Paul and other Christians were persecuted by the Jews. Perhaps this is why Paul wrote, "All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution" (2 Tim. 3:12). If we live a godly life, then we will have to endure persecution.
Acts 17:6 records the Jews as charging Paul and other Christians with having "turned the world upside down." In reality, however, Christianity was turning the world right-side-up. Christians, by living a righteous life, were setting a proper example for everyone around them to see. In Acts 18 we find the Gospel moving into Corinth. Acts 18:8 contains what has been called "the Gospel in a nutshell" ("And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized"). Whatever plan of salvation these people obeyed in the first century, it will be the same for us today.
In Part 3 of his series on "The Gospel into All the World," Ben covers Acts 20-22. In Acts 20:7 we read, "On the first day of the week, the disciples came together to break bread." This verse explains not only an important reason for Christians to worship God on Sunday (i.e., to partake of the Lord's Supper in order to remember Christ's death until He returns—1 Cor. 11:26), but also the frequency of that act. How many weeks have a first day? Every single one. Thus, Christians must assemble on the first day of every week in order to partake of the Lord's Supper.
In Acts 22 Paul recounts the events surrounding his conversion. In Acts 22:16 we read Ananias' comments to him: "Why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord." Many religious people today teach that all a person has to do to be saved is to "call on the name of the Lord." But at what point does a person "call on the name of the Lord"? Acts 22:16 provides the answer. We call on God’s name by doing what God says, which includes being baptized for the remission of our sins.
Both of these new lessons are now available on our Website, where you will find them in video, audio, and written transcript formats. We invite you to examine them for yourself, and to share them with others.
